The Pendragon Cycle: Rise of the Merlin — Board Game Review

Deduction games have been a staple of game night for decades, and The Pendragon Cycle: Rise of the Merlin takes the familiar mystery formula and places it inside the legendary world of Arthurian lore. Published alongside the Pendragon Cycle series from Daily Wire+, this mystery board game invites players to investigate characters, locations, and weapons as they work to uncover the hidden truth.

If you enjoy games like Clue but want a fantasy twist, this Merlin mystery game offers a recognizable system with a few magical additions.

Game Overview

Players: 3–8
Play Time: 30–60 minutes
Age: 14+ (though younger players could likely enjoy it as well)
Publisher: The Pendragon Cycle / Daily Wire+

At the start of the game, the character, location, and weapon cards are separated and shuffled. One card from each category is secretly placed inside the Scribe’s Diary envelope — these are the hidden answers players are trying to deduce.

The remaining cards are shuffled together and dealt evenly to the players. From there, the investigation begins.

Each turn starts with a roll of the dice. Players move from the central location out into the surrounding areas using bridges or secret tunnels. Once you enter a new location, you must first clear an enchantment — special cards that can either help or hinder your progress.

There are eight enchantments shuffled into play at the beginning of the game, adding an extra layer of unpredictability.

When you reach a location, you must include it as part of your deduction guess. You’ll suggest a character, weapon, and the location you’re currently in. Starting with the player to your left, each player secretly shows you a card if they have one matching your guess. If they don’t, the opportunity moves to the next player until someone reveals a card.

Players track this information on their scroll sheet while gradually eliminating possibilities.

Once you believe you’ve identified the three missing cards, you make a final guess by secretly checking the Scribe’s Diary.

If you’re right — you win.

If you’re wrong — you’re eliminated from the game.

A Magical Twist on Classic Deduction

The core gameplay will feel very familiar to anyone who has played Clue. You’re gathering information, making suggestions, and narrowing down the possibilities until the final answer becomes clear.

Where Rise of the Merlin adds its own flavor is through the Arthurian setting, enchantment cards, and character abilities. The characters and abilities follow the storyline of the Pendragon Cycle series, which helps bring a narrative theme to the table.

These abilities and enchantments add small strategic moments that make the experience feel slightly more modern than the classic deduction formula.

Our Table Experience

We played the game with three players.

The first round moved very quickly as we learned the flow of the game, while the next two rounds lasted closer to the full 30-minute mark.

One of the best parts of the night was actually a completely accidental mistake that turned into a hilarious table moment.

During the second game, my husband repeatedly guessed the Sword of Britain as the weapon. Each time he asked if anyone had it, I confidently replied that I didn’t.

Turn after turn, he kept asking.

“Does anyone have the Sword of Britain?”

“Nope.”

“Still nothing.”

“Nope.”

Eventually he made his final guess… and opened the envelope.

“I’m eliminated.”

We were shocked.

Then I looked down at my cards — and sitting right there in my hand was the Sword of Britain.

I had forgotten to mark it on my deduction sheet and never thought to double-check my actual cards. I had essentially spent the entire game accidentally “cheating.”

Of course… I ended up winning.

I will never live that moment down.

Pro tip: Always check your cards — not just your notes.

Table Presence & Components

While the gameplay itself is fun, the visual presentation is somewhat subdued.

The board and components lean toward darker tones, and overall the game doesn’t have the vibrant table presence that many modern board games feature.

The character artwork is nicely done, but some elements — particularly the enchantment cards — could have benefited from a little more visual flair.

Personally, I think the game would have felt more immersive with more stylized pieces or even sculpted character miniatures to bring the Arthurian theme to life on the table.

Final Thoughts

While Rise of the Merlin stays very close to the classic deduction formula, the enchantments and character abilities add just enough variation to keep things interesting.

It’s not a highly complex strategy game, but it delivers what it promises — a light mystery experience that gets people talking, laughing, and trying to outwit each other.

And sometimes accidentally hiding the Sword of Britain in your own hand.
