8 Dragons Board Game Review | A Beautiful Dragon Adventure Full of Treasure and Strategy

Sometimes a game catches your attention because of the mechanics.

Sometimes it catches your attention because of the artwork.

And sometimes it manages to do both.

8 Dragons immediately drew me in with its gorgeous production. From the moment I opened the box, it felt special. The dual-layered board features an inset figure-eight flight path that allows the dragons to move smoothly across the kingdoms, and the wooden dragon pieces physically connect together so you can easily see which wyrmlings belong to your growing swarm. It’s one of those games that makes you stop and admire the table before you’ve even started playing.

How 8 Dragons Plays

In 8 Dragons, your goal is simple: become the dragon with the most gold and the most impressive lair in all of Dragon Rock.

Players fly across the kingdoms of Sinistra and Dextra, stopping at various locations to gather resources, attract wyrmlings, expand their lairs, and collect treasure. As your dragon travels between the north and south regions of the board, young dragons join your swarm, creating new opportunities and abilities throughout the game.

What I really enjoyed is that the game offers meaningful decisions without feeling overwhelming. You’re constantly balancing where to fly next, which locations to prioritize, and how to maximize the benefits from your growing dragon swarm.

What Makes 8 Dragons Special

The production quality is honestly outstanding.

The artwork is beautiful right out of the box, but it goes beyond just looking nice. Everything feels intentionally designed to support the theme. The connected dragon pieces make your swarm feel alive. The dual-layer board keeps movement satisfying and organized. The entire experience feels immersive in a way that many family-weight strategy games struggle to achieve.

I also love how the theme is woven into the gameplay. You’re not simply moving pieces around a board—you’re building a legendary dragon lair, gathering followers, and hunting for treasure.

A Great Balance of Strategy and Accessibility

One thing I appreciate about 8 Dragons is how approachable it feels.

There is enough strategy to keep experienced gamers engaged, but it never feels intimidating. Players still take turns placing dragons, activating effects, and building their own engine, but the game remains easy to follow throughout.

It strikes a really nice balance between meaningful choices and accessibility, making it a game I could comfortably bring out with both hobby gamers and families.

Final Thoughts

8 Dragons is one of the most visually impressive games I’ve played this year. Between the stunning artwork, thoughtful production, and satisfying gameplay, it delivers an experience that feels both welcoming and rewarding.

If you enjoy dragon themes, beautiful table presence, and strategy games that don’t overwhelm, this is absolutely one to keep on your radar.

For me, the biggest surprise wasn’t just how gorgeous the game looks—it was how much fun it was to play.

A cozy recommendation from me.
